~*~ A Healthier Choice- KFC ~*~

I chanced upon the homepage of Yahoo! this morning and watched this interesting video clip which is a news report on KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) substituting trans fat used in cooking with soybean oil. My favourite fast food restuarant is doing something to make faithful customers like me more healthy in consuming their products. I wonder if they have started using soybean oil in Singapore. Looking forward to the change. Way to go, KFC!!!

Something about trans fat
http://health.yahoo.com/experts/heartdisease/218/when-it-comes-to-fats-these-are-the-worst

When It Comes to Fats, These Are the Worst

Posted by Simeon Margolis, M.D., Ph.D.

You should already know about the harmful effects of diets heavy on the saturated fatty acids found in red meats, whole milk, butter, cheeses, and other animal foods. Saturated fatty acids raise blood levels of atherosclerotic LDL cholesterol. But of all the fats, trans fatty acids are the worst because they not only increase LDL cholesterol but also lower levels of protective HDL. Recent studies show that people with the highest intake of trans fats had a greater rate of heart attacks.

Trans fatty acids have a different chemical structure than most of our dietary fats. About 25 percent of the trans fats in our diets come from natural sources, but most dietary trans fatty acids are formed during an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid oils containing unsaturated fats to make products that are solid at room temperature and have a longer shelf life. During hydrogenation, some of the unsaturated fatty acids are converted to trans fats.

Trans fats are found in margarines and commercially prepared foods such as frozen dinners, chips, fried fast foods, crackers, and baked goods.

Consider limiting or avoiding trans fats in your diet. You can choose tub margarines, which contain less trans fats and saturated fats than stick margarines. Also examine food labels: by January 1, 2006, all food manufacturers were required to list the amount of trans fats in each serving of their products. Some manufacturers have even taken this requirement as a hint to remove trans fats from their products.

~*~ Boring me ~*~

My mum just asked me, "Are you having exams now?" I said, "Not yet, just quizzes." My sister remembered and said, "16 November la." Oh gosh, exams just less than 3 weeks later. Time is not enough. If I say that I have not studied or prepared for me, not many people will believe me. I AM LAZY. Last week was my school's E-Learning week. Listened to zero online webcast. What an accomplishment. I wondered how did I waste my week away just like that. Spending much time all by myself doing nothing. Certainly a good way for relaxation as taught in "Mind Over Stress" module. But, it seems to be a wrong timing for relaxation. Need to kick start my engine and start the bubu-power.

Not looking forward to the holidays
I'm not very interested in the holidays this time round except for the tentative tour to Guangzhou, China with my family. Knowing that I will have to rush my FYP to meet the deadline set by my FYP prof- Lab work to be finished by Christmas. Seems like mission impossible for me since my project had gone wrong. Count me unlucky bah. Need to do report-writing and presentation during the hols too. Starting to feel sick of school and immune to exams/tests. I hate writing essays!

Sorry not much photos in my entry
As anyone may have noticed. I don't have much photos in my blog entries. The simple reason being that I don't have my own camera. Although I seem to be in some kind of casual photo-taking with friends frequently, I don't have these photos. Feeling a bit disappointed... and negative about taking photos now. What the point of being in photos when I don't even have a copy.

~*~ Air ain't good for health ~*~

Ever since the hazy days started, my nose started to be out of control. Have 4 nose bleeds so far in these 3 weeks. Went to see the NTU's clinic doc yesterday. Bubu just recovered from runny nose and now having sore throat and cough. The doc said that most probably it is the haze which is causing the nose bleed bah, air is dirty. Haha~ deep down inside, I was thinking... the doc must be telling his patients that the haze has been the reason for illness recently bah.

The cough pills which I got really works! Less cough today and last night. However, got side effects- drowsiness. Slept the whole afternoon! Felt really bad cos Dennis had to use my laptop in my room to do his schoolwork while I sleep comfortably on my own bed.

I feel like eating and drinking lotsa of things-- ice cream, coke, ...

Tips for stopping nose bleed (from answers.com)
Most people who develop nose bleeding can handle the problem without the need of a physician if they follow the recommendations below:

Pinch all the soft parts of the nose together between your thumb and index finger.
Press firmly toward the face - compressing the pinched parts of the nose against the bones of the face.
Hold the nose for at least 5 minutes (timed by the clock). Repeat as necessary until the nose has stopped bleeding.
Sit quietly, keeping the head higher than the level of the heart; that is, sit up or lie with the head elevated. Do not lay flat or put your head between your legs.
Apply ice (crushed in a plastic bag or washcloth) to nose and cheeks.

Time to buck up!
In less than 1 month's time, it's semester examination period! Everyone jia you!! Bubu got to jia you too.

~*~ Being GOONGed ~*~

Channel U is currently showing "Princess Hours" aka Goong, a popular Korean drama series. Sweet story of an ordinary girl with a twist of extraordinary events after being the crown princess. I like the main actress, Yoon Eun-hye, a lot... full of vibrance and super-duper cutey. Even my mummy likes her. heehee~

Here is a clip on some scenes from the drama.

~*~ (F)ather (A)nd (M)other (I) (L)ove (Y)ou ~*~

http://parentswish.com/site02/big.html
Just watched this "video". Very touching. Realised that my parents are getting old le. 22 years have passed le. I have grown up lots physically and mentally with their patient guidance. Love need not be said but it is deeply felt from every little bits and pieces of things my parents have done for me. I love my parents! Remember to show your parents care and concern when you still can. It's not the money you give them, not the big house you let them stay that they really desire, they just want us to lend them listening ear and be there when they need support. I promise I will.

~*~ Some old graphics I stored in my laptop ~*~

I used to save interesting and funny graphics in my computer which I received in my emails.
Here are some which have been in my computer for years....

This one reminds me of the late Steve Irwin. Missing his life-threatening videos. Salute~*

Mind you. Straight minds can see dolphines only while the "crooked" minds see something else. What do you see? Gotcha!

Those handling chemical should have heard of MSDS (Material Specifications Data Sheet). Women also need special care when handling them. An old graphic which have been heavily circulated...

I don't like cats but this one is funny.

~*~ Becoming a FYP auntie ~*~

Whenever there is discount sale going on somewhere, the aunties will rush to it and manifest the area, fighting for cheap items (which they may not need). I feel like such auntie while working on my FYP (final year project) in my lab. Need to "fight" to be able to use equipment and apparatus. Let's see... day one of synthesis of new sample, equipment/apparatus required:
  • 1 digital weight balance
  • 2 weighing boats
  • 1 pipette
  • 1 pH meter
  • 1 500ml beaker
  • 2 250ml beakers
  • 1 250ml conical flask
  • 2 magnetic bars
  • 1 magnetic stirrer cum hotplate
  • 1 burette
  • Aluminum foil
  • 1 measuring cylinder
  • 1 thermometer
  • 1 retort stand
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 disposable dropper

If any of the above items are missing, I can forget about doing my synthesis le. Haha, then I will give myself a break. Every time before I start any synthesis of new sample, I will frantically search for everything I need so that I won't waste my efforts halfway.

Haha~ what a boring entry above right? However, I do synthesis of my catalyst very frequently. By the way, the title of my FYP is "Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue on silver-substituted hydroxyapatite under UV irradiation". Geez~ Long title ah but it summaries my work and scope for my project, short and sweet.

~*~ A new look for BubuLand ~*~

Heehee~ Have been working on my new wallpaper and heading this morning. I find more life in the new appearance with cute babies to cheer readers up. The haze is gone le, surprisingly after the PSI had hit 150 yesterday. It's back to below 30 now. So happy! No more ash smell. Yeah!

I am supposed to be diligent today. Need to catch up on the schoolwork. Feel like taking a nap. ZzZZzzzz....

~*~ Pain Pain go away ~*~

Having headache for 2 days le. Panadol is still the cure for my pain. Trying not to take too much panadol as a quick relief thus I try to bear with the pain for the whole day yesterday and couldn't take. So far I have taken 2 doses of 2 tablets each. Sigh, I don't want to be addicted to medication.

Could it be stress from the quizzes this week? Could it be the hazy weather? Could it be late nights? I don't know why I have headaches. Hope that pain pain will go away. One more FYP seminar presentation to go tomorrow. Jia you jia you jia you!

Happy Mooncake Festival 2006
